According to the report, as a result of the test from a private laboratory, the young man was diagnosed with Naegleria amoeba. According to the family of the affected young man, he had bathed in a private swimming pool a few days ago, after which Muzamil developed fever, vomiting, severe headache. And the state of drowsiness disappeared.
According to hospital officials, the young man was under treatment at Jinnah Hospital for a few days and died. According to the Sindh Health Department, this is the fifth death due to Naegleria in Karachi this year.
In Sindh, one from Naegleria in 2011, 9 in 2012, 3 in 2013, 14 in 2014, 12 in 2015, 3 in 2016, 6 in 2017, 7 in 2018, 15 in 2019, 8 in 2020, 7 in 2021 and 7 in 2022. So far 5 cases have been reported.
Since the outbreak of Naegleria in Sindh, 90 deaths have been reported so far, out of which 86 deaths were from Karachi.
According to medical experts, Naegleria is also called brain-eating amoeba and 98% of people who suffer from it die.
Naegleria fowleri is commonly found in swimming pools, rivers and lakes and causes a fatal brain infection called Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) in humans. Not to join.
According to Professor Abdul Malik, an expert in mental and neurological diseases, if the bacteria present in unchlorinated water reaches the brain through the nose of a person, it quickly starts eating the brain, its symptoms begin to appear after a week and In two or three weeks the victim dies.
He said that usually this disease is diagnosed after the death of a person or it is diagnosed when the chances of survival of a person are completely gone.
Symptoms of this disease include headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, altered mental status, hallucinations, coma, confusion, inattention to people and surroundings, loss of balance, seizures and sometimes seizures. Includes stuffy nose.
Professor Abdul Malik told Sama Digital that Naegleria fowleri is a type of amoeba that feeds on others, is found in unchlorinated fresh water and is usually found in ponds, swimming pools or water tanks at home. Yes, this microbe enters the human brain through the nose and starts eating the front part of the brain, that’s why it is also called brain-eating microbe.
He said that a person infected with Naegleria fowleri first has a mild headache, after which drowsiness begins to fade, when the condition worsens, when he is brought to the hospital, it is too late and by then, this microbe is the infected person. 98% of people infected with this microbe die.
