The Sindh High Court ordered the provincial government to fix the price per maund of sugarcane by November 30 and start the crushing season by running sugar mills.
A two-member bench chaired by the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court heard on the application related to setting the per maund price of sugarcane and running sugar mills. Kane Commissioner appeared in the court and informed that a meeting has been held with mill owners and settlers and another one will be held on November 10.
The Supreme Court, while giving the final date of November 30, ordered that the sugar mills should be operated on November 30 only with the price fixed per sugarcane.
The court issued the order and adjourned the hearing for an indefinite period. The petitioner’s counsel took the stand that the season has started from October 1 but the price has not been fixed yet. Crops have been completely destroyed due to floods in Sindh. Especially rice, maize crops have been destroyed.
Kane Commissioner said that there has been a lot of progress in the matter, now the board meeting will be held soon in which the price will be fixed. The sugarcane crop is ready but its price is not being fixed nor has any notification been issued to run sugar mills.
According to the law, sugar mills in Sindh were supposed to operate on October 1, but before that, the price of sugarcane has to be fixed. Sindh government should be ordered to fix sugarcane price immediately and run sugar mills.
