A New York City store is engulfed in flames after an e-bike battery explodes—caught on video for viewing.
A startling video, made public by the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), depicts the harrowing instance of a lithium-ion battery explosion in an e-bike. This triggered a destructive fire that consumed a Queens store.
The alarming video stands as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with these batteries. It showcases the potential for significant fires, sparking worries about the safety of electronic devices using similar technology.
A surveillance recording from inside an e-bike store on a Saturday night initially shows a usual scene, with numerous mopeds filling the space. However, chaos quickly unfolds as the footage captures the abrupt and intense explosion of a battery, igniting a fierce fire.
Upon a prompt response to the two-alarm fire, the FDNY found nearly twenty e-bikes ablaze. Thankfully, the store was empty at the time, preventing any civilian casualties. Unfortunately, a firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling the aggressive flames.
Investigations pinpointed the lithium-ion battery in one of the e-bikes as the ignition source. The footage, recorded around 10:40 pm, vividly portrays the rapid sequence of sparks and explosions that rapidly escalated into a raging fire, engulfing the entire shop within minutes.
As e-bikes become increasingly common in New York City, the FDNY reported more than 130 fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters in 2022 alone. These incidents resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved safety measures concerning these widely used electronic devices.
Authorities, including the US National Fire Protection Association, stress the necessity of adhering to safety protocols to mitigate such risks.
Consistently, the FDNY has alerted residents about the potential hazards associated with e-bike lithium-ion batteries.
