The Kindness and Mercy of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The Prophet Muhammad taught his people love, kindness, and compassion, and was regarded as the most loving, kind, and compassionate of all.

There are several examples of his kindness and gentleness, particularly toward the weak and destitute. “I served Allah’s Messenger for ten years and he never remarked to me, ‘Shame,’ or ‘Why did you do such-and-such a thing?’ or ‘Why did you not do such-and-such a thing?'” said Hazrat Anas, his servant. (2038 ,Bukhari).

He was deeply concerned about the well-being of all people and was compassionate toward those in need. The Prophet Muhammad perfectly imitated God’s characteristics and translated them into practice in the best form imaginable for man. Kindness is an attribute of Allah that knows no bounds. It is vast and includes all things and all beings without distinction.

Similarly, the Prophet’s benevolence. He extended it to all beings, both animate and inanimate, and helped everyone inexhaustibly. The Quranic phrases describing the Prophet’s kindness, ra’ufun return (Quran 9:128), are highly rich in significance and express the true nature and scope of the Prophet’s kindness to humanity.

The concept of treating friends well was expanded to encompass family members: “He who wishes to have his provision increased and his life extended should treat his relatives well” (Bukhari, 5985). He highlighted this point because he believed that “only kindness prolongs life, and a person is denied of provisions for the mistakes he does” (Ibn Majah).

On his father’s authority, Baez b. Hakim stated that his grandfather told him that he had asked Allah’s Messenger to whom he should pay kindness, and the Prophet had responded, “Your mother.” He questioned who will come next, to which he answered, “Your mother.” He inquired who came next, and for the third time, he said, “Your mother.” He inquired again, and this time he replied, “Your father, then your family in order of relationship” (Abu Dawud, 5120). He went on to say that “the best house among the Muslims is one that contains an orphan who is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims has an orphan who is badly handled.”

Prophet Muhammad intended to make all humans interdependent by extending good treatment from friends to relatives and now to neighbors, as he stated in the following words: “All creatures are Allah’s dependents, and those dearest to God are those who treat His dependents pleasantly.”
